Mathematics

Maths – Nova Numeracy

At Nova Primary Academy we aim to help children to develop a love for Mathematics. It is an interconnected subject in which pupils need to be able to move fluently between representations of mathematical ideas. The programmes of study are, by necessity, organised into apparently distinct domains, but pupils should make rich connections across mathematical ideas to develop fluency, mathematical reasoning and competence in solving increasingly sophisticated problems. They should also apply their mathematical knowledge to Science and other subjects. The National Curriculum for Mathematics aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.
  • reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, finding relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language
  • can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions.

Teaching and Learning

From EYFS to  Year 6 we use a teaching scheme, White Rose Maths, which provides a rich and varied curriculum which supports the progression of pupils.  It is crafted the help inspire a genuine love of maths and help every child master the national curriculum.

In EYFS Early Learning Goals are followed to ensure continuity and progression from the Foundation Stage through to the National Curriculum. Planning is derived from White Rose scheme which ensures an active and exciting approach to Maths.

In years 1-5 the children are taught in their classes with adaptations made to ensure the learning is accessible and meets their needs.  

Supporting your child at home

Homework, in line with the school policy, is set by class teachers and may include online activities/worksheets from White Rose focusing on the learning the children have been accessing in school that week.

Assessment

Number and place value, addition and subtraction, multiplication and division, fractions, measurements, geometry and statistics are assessed using the statutory requirement as outlined in the National Curriculum.

NFER assessments are used termly to track the progress of children throughout the school. In addition, children complete regular arithmetic tests, which are recorded and used to assess children's procedural knowledge and identify gaps in learning. These gaps are then retaught and over learnt in the morning arithmetic session.  

To further develop pupils' procedural knowledge and understanding of formal written methods, we regularly practice arithmetic and quiz weekly. Quiz results are carefully tracked by teachers and leaders, who use this information to form their planning.
